Introduction: Ovarian cancer is the third common gynecologic malignancy in Poland. About 70 % of patients present advanced stage of the disease, chiefly because there is no reliable screening technique for early detection. Materials and methods: Diagnostic studies that allow accurate cancer staging should help determine surgical and chemotherapeutic planning. The aim of the study was to compare and assess the value of ultrasound imaging with the use of color doppler and Technetium-99m sestaMIBI scintigraphy in diagnosis of malignant ovarian tumors. Results: All patients, 21 with ovarian cancer and 36 with benign tumors were examined, diagnosed and treated because of adnexal pathology in Chair and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology II Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Warsaw. Sensitivity, specifity, positive and negative predictive value of the both diagnostic methods were evaluated. Detailed statistical analysis of the obtained results showed a considerably higher distinction of the sensitivity of the Tc-99m sestaMIBI scintigraphy in comparison with ultrasound imaging used for detecting the metastases of the ovarian malignant carcinoma to the abdominal cavity. Findings: Further studies are needed to determine the efficiency of this new diagnostic method.
