Preterm delivery is a delivery between 22 and 36 weeks gestation. The incidence of preterm deliveries in Poland is approximately 7%. It is still one of the major causes of perinatal mortality and newborn morbidity. The present study is devoted to current classifications of preterm deliveries as well as to their management including an early identification of risk factors, a diagnosis with the recognition of underlying causes, an evaluation of fetal condition and the pharmacological treatment. The section on pharmacotherapy discusses the use of glycocorticosteroids taking into account Polish and foreign recommendations. It also presents the regimens of tocolytic drug administration, including their efficacy, indications and contraindications. Also, guidelines concerning methods of delivery and prevention of preterm delivery have been presented
